What Importers Should Confirm Before Sourcing Pet Furniture

A pre-order checklist for buying co-living and pet furniture from China: the specification points that decide whether a quotation is real, and the questions that separate a manufacturing partner from a catalogue seller.

What should importers confirm before ordering pet furniture?

Before placing an order, confirm the product specification (dimensions, materials, openings against pet size), the packing plan (carton sizes, knock-down design, container loading), the commercial terms (MOQ, pricing, lead time and payment — all confirmed through a formal review), and the compliance documents required in the destination market. Anything answered with a slogan instead of a number will come back as a surprise after deposit.

1. The specification: write it down before you ask for a price

Pet furniture quotes vary wildly for the same photo because the photo hides the decisions. Two “identical” cat towers can differ in panel thickness, opening size, cushion density and hardware. A quotation is only as good as the sheet behind it.

A workable first specification names: outer dimensions and weight class of the target pet; opening dimensions for every cave or capsule; material and finish for every visible surface; cushion fill and cover removability; hardware type for knock-down assembly; and branding points — logo method, placement, packing language.

If you cannot fill a line, write the question into the sheet. Manufacturers answer sheets, not vibes.

2. Openings and pet size: the detail that generates returns

The most expensive mistake in integrated pet furniture is an opening sized for the wrong animal. A cave that fits a 4 kg cat excludes the 12 kg cat your marketing implies; a sofa nest quoted for “small dogs” needs a number, not an adjective.

Insist on an opening-dimension table for every piece, matched to the pet weight classes you plan to claim. This is also the moment to discuss structure: how tall pieces resist tipping, whether wall anchoring is part of the design, and what the weight-bearing expectation is for pieces a human might lean on.

3. Packing: bulky goods live or die by the carton

Pet furniture is bulky furniture. The packing plan decides your freight cost, your damage rate and your warehouse shelf height. Before ordering, confirm:

knock-down design — which pieces ship flat and which ship assembled; carton dimensions and gross weight per box; units per carton and mixed-SKU loading; retail-ready versus export cartons; and a container loading plan for your expected mix. If a supplier cannot produce a loading plan for your quantities, they have not actually engineered the packing.

4. Commercial terms: what a real review looks like

MOQ, price, lead time and payment terms interact — a low MOQ on a fully custom piece is priced into the unit cost, and a fast lead time quoted before design review is a guess. A serious program review connects them: MOQ evaluated by product, customization scope and order quantity; pricing quoted after specifications, materials, packaging and quantity are confirmed; lead time confirmed after design, sample and order requirements are reviewed.

Ask for the terms in writing against your specification. If the numbers arrive before the questions, the supplier is selling a catalogue, not building a program.

5. Compliance: start from the destination, not the factory

Compliance for pet furniture is market-specific and product-specific: material-safety expectations differ between the EU, the US and the Gulf; electrical components — the interior night lights common in co-living nightstands — carry their own destination requirements. The practical approach: name your target market and sales channel in the brief, and ask which documents and tests apply to the exact products in your sheet. Available compliance documents and target-market requirements should be reviewed per project, before deposit — not after production.

6. Samples: pay for the boring ones

Buyers love sampling the hero piece and skip the boring ones — the plain nightstand, the standard carton. Sample both. The hero proves the design; the boring piece proves the factory’s daily standard, and the carton proves the packing plan. A sample review that checks opening sizes against the specification sheet — tape measure, not vibes — is worth more than any factory video.

7. A one-page pre-order checklist

# Confirm In writing
1 Dimensions and opening sizes per piece, matched to pet weight classes Specification sheet
2 Materials and finishes per visible surface; cushion fill and covers Specification sheet
3 Knock-down design, hardware, assembly instructions Sample + sheet
4 Carton sizes, weights, units per box, container loading plan Packing plan
5 MOQ, pricing, lead time, payment terms against the specification Quotation
6 Compliance documents and tests for the destination market Document list
7 Branding: logo method, placement, packing language Specification sheet

Questions importers ask

What information is needed for an OEM pet furniture quote?

Product category, target market, expected quantity, preferred dimensions, color or material direction, packaging needs and required compliance documents. With those, the quotation answers your program instead of a generic catalogue page.

Is a lower MOQ always available on custom pieces?

MOQ is evaluated by product, customization scope and order quantity. Custom pieces carry setup costs that someone pays — the review tells you where. A branded existing silhouette usually carries a lower threshold than a from-scratch format.

How do we verify a manufacturer before the first order?

Same as ordinary furniture: specification answers in writing, a physical sample of both the hero and a standard piece, a real packing plan, documents identified per your market — and, for serious volumes, a production visit. Showrooms exist precisely so buyers can put hands on the range before committing.
